Self-Care is Self-Love: Why Taking Care of Yourself is So Important

When your laptop is running out of battery, do you not put it on charging? 

After playing football for a week, will you not ensure that you pump it up again to ensure that it is proper pressure?

Once you are back home, do you not make sure that you put your things away and set everything for the next day?

The way you take care of all your things, do you not need to take care of your own self as well?

Of course you do!

Self love for kids is a conversation that needs to come front and centre and that is what we are doing now. 

What exactly is self care for kids?

Self-care is simply doing things that make you feel happy, healthy, and relaxed. It’s like a little treat for your mind, body, and heart.

Imagine this – you have a little tank inside of you and it gets filled up every time you do something that makes you happy. When this tank is full, you are able to do everything with a sense of energy and zeal. Like any other tank, it is bound to drain out, and every time that happens, you do something that makes you happy again. 

Self-care is different for everyone – some people like listening to music, others enjoy playing a sport; some people like to go out with the family while some just like to sleep! You might actually be doing a few self care activities every day, without even realising that you are doing so:

  • When you take a break and stretch after completing a big project

  • When you curl up in your mom’s lap, after dinner

  • When you are playing outdoors with your friends

  • When you are goofing around with your puppy

Yup, these are all ways of self love, but you need to understand that along with physical health, mental health is also important.

We know of adults who would say, “Oh, why is self care so important?” “All this self care is actually selfish”. 

Nope – don’t listen to any of this, because there is nothing wrong in loving yourself and taking care of yourself is actually important. We at Tikitoro know that and understand it well! 

These are the 4 main reasons why you need to indulge in self love:

  1. When you do things that make you feel good, like taking a break when you’re tired or spending time on a fun hobby, it gives your brain a boost. Your brain sends out happy signals, kind of like tiny fireworks of joy! This makes you feel more positive and ready to enjoy your day.

  2. Let’s be real - sometimes life can feel a little stressful. There is so much to do at school, homework, or even a tiff with your best friend; big emotions can sneak in anytime. That is where our superhero named self love comes in! Self care calms you down and helps you deal with those tough moments.

  3. When you take care of your body - like getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and being active - it helps you stay strong and full of energy. It’s like you’re giving your body superpowers! Plus, when your body feels good, it’s easier for your mind to feel good, too.

  4. Here is another one of kids self care importance; when you practise self love, you are showing yourself that you are important and that you matter. Now, when you feel important, you are a lot more confident and that allows you to try new things, make friends, and face challenges with a smile.

But what is the “how to” of self care for kids?

First of all, you don’t have to wait to indulge in some kids self care; it can start right now! We would say, the sooner the better! 

And in case you are wondering ‘how to’ do it, it’s super simple! Just do whatever makes you the happies!

Here are some ideas to get those self love juices pouring: 

  • Are you a bookworm? Do you like reading? Then figure out a comfortable corner of the house or even head to the garden and just read. 

  • Create a chill zone in your own room – throw some cushions or bring out a bean bag or maybe set up a tent and do whatever you like in that space. 

  • Do something creative – colour, draw, paint, build with Legos; when you are doing something creative, your take your mind off any worries and express yourself in a better way. 

  • Are you one of those people who like pamper themselves? How about picking your favourite Tikitoro product and indulging in a nice long bath and shampoo session?

  • Make a playlist of all your favourite songs that make you want to dance, sing, or just smile. Whenever you’re feeling a bit down, pop on your playlist and let the music work its magic! You’ll be dancing in no time, we promise!

  • Sometimes, the best form of self care is to just vent it out – no matter what is bothering you, no matter how small or silly it might seem, just let it all out in front of someone you trust and you will definitely feel better. 

At the end of the day, self-care is all about being kind to yourself. It’s about feeling good and being happy; whether it’s taking a few minutes to relax, doing something fun, or making sure your body gets what it needs, self-care is the ultimate way to show yourself some love. 

So, the next time you feel tired, stressed, or just need a little pick-me-up, remember: you are important, and taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do.
