Managing Your Kids' Skin This Monsoon

The monsoon’s here to fill the air with a refreshing vibe and bring the much-needed relief from the scorching heat!

But, the increased humidity during this time can pose many challenges for maintaining healthy skin, especially for kids. And that’s why we’re here to guide you through the best monsoon skincare routine for your little ones!

Let’s talk about the common skin issues faced by kids during the monsoon.

Understanding Monsoon Skin Challenges

The Impact of Monsoon on Kids' Skin

During the monsoon season, the humidity levels rise drastically.

This affects the skin's natural balance. Kids' skin is more sensitive and prone to damage during this time. The high humidity can lead to excessive oil production, clogged pores, fungal infections, and even rashes.

And so, it is vital that we establish a proper skincare routine for them. But before you can do that, you need first look for the specific issues that your child is facing.

Identifying Monsoon Skin Problems

Fungal infections and rashes are common skin issues faced by kids during the monsoon.

The warm and damp environment is a breeding ground for fungi, leading to infections like ringworm and candidiasis. Also, acne breakouts in pre-teens are really common at this time. This is because of the excessive sebum production that occurs usually with dehydrated skin.

Some kids may also experience dryness and flaky skin conditions.

But don’t worry. You can easily combat these challenges by simply being more mindful of your kid’s skincare.
Here are  some essential monsoon skincare tips for kids that you can get started with.

Basic Monsoon Skin Care Tips for Kids

Cleansing and Hygiene

It’s a no-brainer that regular cleansing is crucial to remove dirt, sweat, and excess oil from the skin.

So opt for gentle cleansers specifically formulated for your kid’s delicate skin. Encourage your child to wash their face and body with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser at least twice a day.

Gently pat the skin dry using a soft towel. Avoid rubbing as this can cause irritation. Once you’re done with that, emphasise the importance of washing hands frequently to prevent the transfer of germs.

Moisturising and Hydration

Even though the humidity is high during the rains, some areas can have an increased number of pollen in the air, which can cause allergies to some kids like sinus infections and inflamed skin.

And so it goes without saying that hydration is an absolute must in kids’ skincare.

Choose lightweight, non-greasy moisturisers suitable for kids.

After bathing or washing their face, apply the moisturiser to lock in the moisture. Look for moisturisers that contain ingredients like Aloe Vera because Aloe Vera is known to provide hydration without the clogging of pores. It’s also an excellent ingredient to help soothe inflamed and irritated skin.

Also encourage your child to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to maintain hydration from within. This will help keep their skin supple and healthy!

Sun Protection

Contrary to popular belief, UV rays can still harm the skin during the monsoon.

Cloud cover does not provide complete protection from harmful rays. So ensure your kid applies a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a suitable SPF before heading outdoors, especially during peak hours.

Look for water-resistant formulas to withstand sweat and humidity.

Reapply the sunscreen every two to three hours, especially if they are engaged in outdoor activities or if they get wet.

Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Speaking of which…

Preventing Fungal Infections

To prevent fungal infections, it is vital to keep the skin dry and moisture-free.

Fungi thrive in warm and damp environments. Teach your child the importance of drying themselves thoroughly, especially in the folds of the skin.

Encourage them to wear loose, breathable clothing made of natural fibres, such as cotton, to allow proper air circulation. Change wet clothes, socks, and shoes promptly.

And if your child tends to sweat excessively, consider using talcum powder or antifungal powders in areas prone to moisture, such as the armpits and the groyne.

Healthy Diet and Nutrition

A balanced diet plays a huge role in maintaining healthy skin. But we bet you already know that.

So include plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants to boost your child’s skin immunity and combat free radicals.

A strong immune system is crucial for the overall well-being of your child. This also includes their skin health.

Ensure your child consumes a nutritious diet consisting of lean proteins, whole grains, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Consider adding immune-boosting foods like turmeric, ginger, garlic, and yoghurt to their meals.

These ingredients contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties that can help strengthen the immune system. Encourage regular physical activity and exercise to enhance their immune response and circulation.

During the rainy days, especially incorporate more fruits like oranges, papaya, cucumber, and watermelon into your child's diet. These fruits are hydrating and help replenish the skin's moisture levels. Vegetables like spinach, carrots, and broccoli are also great in providing the essential vitamins and minerals that your kid needs to promote their overall skin health.

Do Not Neglect The Feet!

Feet are particularly prone to fungal infections and odours during the monsoon.

So teach your child the importance of keeping their feet clean and dry. As parents, we need to be mindful of our kid’s moves every step of the day.

Ensure they wash their feet thoroughly with an antibacterial soap and dry them completely, especially between the toes. Apply talcum powder or antifungal powders to absorb excess moisture and keep the feet fresh.

Encourage them to wear open-toe or well-ventilated footwear made of breathable materials to allow air circulation and prevent fungal growth.

Hygiene Practices

At Tikitoro, we always stress on teaching and encouraging kids to take care of their hair and skin independently from a very young age. As parents, you can interfere to practise a particular step every now and then. But it’s necessary you also teach them how to do it on their own.

This is especially important when it comes to regular hygiene.

In addition to skincare, maintaining overall hygiene is crucial during the monsoon season. So encourage your child to change wet clothes and socks immediately to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. Trim their nails regularly to prevent dirt and bacteria buildup.

Teach them proper handwashing techniques using soap and water for at least 20 seconds to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of germs.

Sharing personal hygiene items like towels, combs, and hair accessories can spread infections, so make sure you provide your kid with their own personalised items. Having personal care items that are especially made for them makes practising personal care a lot more fun, safe, and hygienic.

Don’t worry, because we’ve come up with a solution for this!
